As of today, amazon is implementing full-text search for 120,000 books! This portends a time in which it is much easier to find books from which you just remember a catchy quote. A time in which it is difficult to plagiarize anything. Ha ha, take that biters!
They are giving away a segway. However, a full recall is in effect:
Segfault

The problem causes the segway to run out of power and dump you on your face, especially if you are president of the USA.

okay okay this whole post was an excuse for that "segfault" thing

so Amazon is going to attempt to create a Book database something along the lines of IMDB? or they are going to have full text of books?

where does copyright become an issue here? is it just a search function? Hmmmmm. WHere is there a link about this, I'm curious for more info. TOo many authors suing already cause their text is on the internet, want to see how Amazon is going to get around that.

ah, it would help if I went to the amazon site, I didn't realize they had a note up on their homepage about it.

Seems like it would be okay to use an author's text for the purpose of locating a book for purchase, which is always imminent when you are on amazon's site. I know I wouldn't complain if I were an author. They might have an agreement with the publishers, like how radio stations and malls bulk license music from BMI/ASCAP/the euro onem which would explain the difference between the 120,000 "participating" texts and every other text.

I see that the site has the author sign over the copyright when they voluntarily submit their book to be part of the index - so the 120,000 already there must have had approval before doing so

plus they have to be of books in print and available (if the submission guidelines are any help)

very interesting this whole thing. An entire library on microfiche (essentially).

Does this mean you're now an employee?

Nope. I think it is good to discuss ones employer as little as possible online.
