So today's choices are:
  1. talk about the same thing as everyone else, increasing the ambient hostility and "I'm so sick of hearing about it"
  2. pretend that nothing worth mentioning happened, as if you had just stepped off a spaceship from mars and wanted to know some good restaurants in this area.
These choices suck, much like another recent choice I am pretending didn't happen but am still concerned about. Some good news? Well gee. Er.. there was no guarantee Kerry wasn't a neo-con as well? Nader didn't make a significant impact? We might get a decision soon and be able to get on with our lives?

I am mainly going with option 2, mixed with limited silver-lining-hunting (i.e. "Well, at least Kerry took Wisconsin and Minnesota" or "at least the school board candidates I voted for won").

Also I am getting really annoyed with people cursing out flyover country. Yeah it sucks that Bush won, but mix it up a bit! Verbally ream out Texas and Florida or something! Christ. Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma COMBINED have exactly the same number of electoral college votes as Texas does. Yeah those states make a big red spot on the map, but they are not what decided this election.

Right. I can keep hope that I'm not completely out of touch with my country, at least the parts that I've lived in. I hate to think that I couldn't relate to everyone somehow.

I am waiting for the governor race results, though.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Politics can easily drive you to despair, and it gets nasty quickly.

I do believe that is still option 2, but you go with whatever seems prudent. Prudent! Boy, I hope Bush Jr. adopts that word as heartily as his dad. PROODUNT

I freely acknowledge what's going on, but decline to discuss it in any detail at the moment, hence why I think it's actually a mix of both options.

But now I am going to bed.

Well since I'm located in the heart of the 'deep South, nearly everyone here is celebrating..I was taking my daily walk and three girls in a car pulled up, smiled at me, and then whooped BUSH won..and then started screaming and hooping and 'ahollering'..their joy. I guess it's different everywhere you go... but here...it's all celebrations and 'sighs' of relief that ti's over. Therefore, I figured it best that I just act like nothing happened at all. ahaha It's all good. I hope. CJ

You know, I'm glad someone is in a good mood. I don't know, maybe I'd be happy too, if I had been born in the South. As it is, I grew up around all these democrats, so that's the way I think. I'm sure it could have just as easily been another way. But even if it had - would I be celebrating today? I envy your relentlessly upbeat attitude, CJ.

Well, I was born in the South and I'm sure not happy. Of course, my state went red so I guess most other people are. Southern democrats do exist - a rare, hardy breed (except good ol' Zell, we don't like to talk about him). We're sort of like martians anyway so I guess I'll go with option 2. beep boop.

How did you come to believe the things you do? You probably learned as much as you could, listened to the things going on around you, and decided based on what you felt was right, right? Right.

All of those things are shaped by your environment. You can be taught only certain things. You can be told only certain things. Your values are shaped during your development, by the things around you. It's more severe when you are isolated, of course.

I don't think there's anything particularly special about me that would make me lean left if everything I was told, shown, and valued made that seem like a bad idea.

But I get off the topic! People can and do develop opposite ideologies from the people around them physically! Yes, you Southern Democrats - you might take a lot of heat sometimes. But there are enough of you that the south is more purplish than red, really. Whew.

Might want to learn about Canadian politics first. We had our federal election months ago. The Liberals won a minority, which is a good thing for all four parties, keeps them all vocal and accountable.

And today our dollar rose by 1.03 cents against the US dollar, yay.

Mess? That's offensive.

Um, I was reffering the election in which Ralph Klein will hopefully be ousted. Y'know the man who invades homeless shelters at midnight and throws money at the homeless when they are annoyed at being woken from a warm sleep? The guy who wants to ban gay marriage and institute private healthcare? Thanks.
This is the last I'll say on the subject here because I respect [info]andr00 and its doubtful we could find common ground through this discussion.

Wow, that would have to go pretty badly. The last thing we need is Canada invading other countries pre-emptively. Which country poses the biggest immediate physical threat to Canada? And definitely has huge stockpiles of WMD? Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Yeah, I was glad to see that. Me n' Ed n' Karen n' Helen had a little debate about it on election night, but I think we'll all be relieved when they finally build SOMETHING.

See, we'd have an easier time passing monorail things if they were presented as "Initiative to provide alternate forms of transportation to someone who would otherwise be turning left from the right lane, in front of you."

I'm going to be looking for my letter to the editor in the next Stranger. They did a lot of good work saying nasty things about Martin Selig, but I never really saw any local newspaper that was able to make a sensical remark about why Selig was being all activist-y all of a sudden with Monorail Recall, aside from saying he has some Hummers and doesn't like taxes and kicks puppies and such.

It's land use. I mean, wtf could he want more than that? The erosion of the government's say in land use would, like, rock his world. It fits with the lying and the puppies and the sudden support for the light rail, seeing as the light rail is a different beast - running at grade on city streets. I just wish I'd thought of it sooner.

I agree 100%. I, for one, am sick of endlessly hearing about the NHL lockout! Both the players' union and the owners need to get their heads checked. You would think that something as important as a hotly contested US presidential race would knock hockey off the front pages, but no, it's blah blah blah salary cap blah blah canceled games 24/7.

The hockey insanity must stop!! :(

Actually, this isn't something that I think about much! Ditto which hockey player is the cutest, although I'd say that hockey players, as a group, are far more attractive than baseball, football, and basketball players. And the "hockey hair" thing is greatly exaggerated: hockey players had bad hair when the general male population had bad hair, in the hay day of the mullet. Although clueless Euros like Jaromir Jagr persisted with their sweat-drenched, stringy long locks well into the early 90s.

Oh yeah, I'd probably say that Jagr (hideous pic #2) is my vote for Ugliest Hockey Player, for his horrendous hair if nothing else. :) Which is sort of ironic since he's considered "hot" by many female fans.

just leaving a comment to say hi and that i added you to my friends list. just to make the comment relevant, im pissed that bush is somehow still in office... but the positive side to me is how close the race was. i thought bush would win by a larger margin then he did. *sigh* the country probably will survive four more years, but only time will tell ;)

Hey, hi. Welcome to the ol' friends list. Yep, we'll survive. It's not like he's trying to make slavery legal again. What is galling is the voting irregularities and stonewalling. Our government should be TRANSPARENT. What is with all the SECRECY? I have to stop there, as it is a sore point for me.
