"Okay," I thought, "I'll go to the store and get some BIC pens and a padlock. Oh, and some ice cream to soothe my anxious sense of imminent loss. Maybe it's really hard with my lock. Or I'll find it really hard, which will reassure me."

Elapsed time: about one minute. In case it's not apparent, that's a Kryptonite Evolution 2000 U-lock. I just opened it with that bic pen sticking out of it. In about a minute, first try.

holy craptastic fuck. i just knew it wasn't crap but i really know it now that the lock was one not cheap piece of crap and thank god I still have my bike although mine is a '96 or '97 GF and maybe not so wantable? We do have a Kai Tai aluminum vs. my chromoly Hoo koo ee koo, though, so that is a drag.

I am so sick of flushing money down the crapper, too. One minute. wow. So not down with the Kryptonite, brother. *sigh* Fluke's on the way, though. (trying to console thy po'd self) oh, what would I do w/o my Lj friends? Signed up for the bike forums too. Knowledge is power or something.

Uh, those are still wantable bikes. Anyhow, looks like Kryptonite DOES make a U-shackle with a different kind of lock mechanism, the "piksafe disc lock" (but is it pensafe?) which may be safe from writing implements of all types. They keys look more car-key like. But. They only include it in their super-pricy "New York 3000" line of locks here in the US. In Europe they sell a "Evolution 3000" which is like our locks but with the bicsafe disc cylinder. I guess they don't want it competing with the NY ones. Hmm. It's hard to trust kryptonite again, but it looks like all cylinder-key locks are vulnerable.. K 3000 may be the best thing we got going.

'd be nice if they'd let me send back the K2000 for some kind of trade-in compensation against the 3000. What else can I do but do the K3000, regardless....and I thank thee muchly for the research that you did, kind sir.

I'm hoping for some kind of deal like that, yeah. I'm thinking they're getting about a thousand unhappy emails right about now, and the memo for the emergency PR response meeting is sitting in the executive inboxes. We'll see.

Looks like we're supposed to call kryptonite tomorrow, they're going to let us trade in our crossbars. Either for free, or for a discount, depending on how long ago you got it. Got a receipt or something?

Been tearing through files looking for the receipt and I think my husband used it for taxes...and now he's not home and I don't know if he even kept it. I DO have the # on the other side of the black plastic lock plus the two spares: L5280 and the original packaging but I don't know if it's going to help... Or could it? It was after my brain injury and my memory except for being in the store, asking ?'s and such with my hubby before deciding to buy it is crap...I remember going into a bike store in Boulder with my hubster but the date and year? W/o a receipt...I can only guess at this point unless the number I just gave you will establish when this Boulder high end cycling dealer would have sold it and their name is completely, completely escaping me and Jack isn't home for me to ask him that, either. Will try calling him but he usually doesn't answer when up to his elbows in care engine. I'm ready to buy one at discount if they'll let me return the one I have, never EVER used...can't be more than 1-1/2 years' old but ? I can't prove it w/o the receipt. Damn. Do I even have a prayer? They never sent another email...wasn't on the forum...is that how you guys find out re calling them tom'w? DUH, I feel so DUH. So I'm going to try Jack now and see what he has to say as I find *his* ofc filing system daunting to say the least. Let me know what you think re my minimal info and what you're getting...and what they say if I can't get any further info excepting the full packaging and lock number. The packaging was just a mostly bright green card-boardy wraparound thing with the "BracKIT" thingie stapled to it with the hardware, etc.

Easy there, supercat - there may be a proof-of-purchase on that there green box thing. I don't have the box, but probably have the receipt. Who knows which of us is in better shape.

Also, the day to bug them is wednesday, not tomorrow! You have a little while more to bug the mister.

Heh. He just came home and seems to remember less than I do, harumph. I think his head is all filled up with other things lately. Well, there IS that there green box thing, and some hope of some kind still. Right when I was typing whatever to you earlier, the neighbor was banging on the front door and I got all fluster-dy because there is a husband problem. So much for my s00pah powers. They are not consistent, evidently. Must get an off-on switch installed.

Hey, Kryptonite update. They're not gonna require much out of you at all. Just send an email to kryptonite@irco.com. You'll get an auto response asking for name, address, and lock type. My understanding is, they'll take care of postage and everything, you don't need any proof of anything, and the new locks will be shipping in a few weeks. So I think they're taking care of it pretty well.

C00l. Just sent the email. The bike forum sent me something about the web site but I've still been feeling pukey and didn't go there as of today. Wow. This is a tremendous response; more than I expected from them. Thank you for letting me know about this! Have a great weekend, andr00. (wow.wow.wow.wow............:O)

Here's the pertinent part of the auto-response I got. I hope that they don't wimp out per any part of this:

***"based on product availability and first come, first served, blah blah"***

--but have decided to take it at face value: that all will go well.

(verbatim from auto-reply via Kryptonite)
*Once we receive the above information, we will contact you with specific
details as to how to return your Kryptonite lock (postage paid). Upon
receipt of your tubular cylinder Kryptonite lock, we will send to you a
replacement Kryptonite non-tubular cylinder lock free of charge.
****Replacement locks will be sent beginning mid-October on a first come, first
served basis, based on product availability.****"

I am just leery of the whole cylindrical lock mechanism scheme at this point. Stocks Locks have those, right?

Wow, to be perfectly honest I don't know anything about bikes but I have to admit this entry really sparked my interest in BIKE LOCKS. I almost want to go out and buy one of those locks just to see if I can open it with a ballpoint pen too.

By the way, I like how you posted the picture, it's very moving.

Some people have been like, "anyone who wants to open a lock can, thieves use car jacks, freon, 2x4s, blah blah blah" completely missing the point. To wit: I handed my girlfriend my new lock and a new BIC pen, and told her what to do, and she had the lock open in a few seconds, having never picked a lock in her life. THAT'S a problem. I bet you could do it, too.
