Hey! Know what's news today? I RAN. No, not the country. Well yeah I'm sure it's in the news SOMEWHERE. But in local news, I, Andrew, ran. On purpose. Around discovery park, on trails. Trail running! So that's something like 2.5 miles of running? Know what?

RUNNING IS HARD. At least, at first. It's my first day running!

And it uses different muscles from cycling, so parts of my legs are really upset that they got treated so roughly. (Other parts are relieved that someone else had to do some work for once). Well, we're all going to have to get used to it, because road biking isn't really an option right now. Some of the muscles that got completely exhausted are ones that get used only intermittently when walking. So afterwards I'd be walking along all normal-like, then maybe compensate slightly for stepping over a curb and BOING, right leg goes out. Surprising!

Helen's happy, because she's been trying to get me to run with her ever since she started running half marathons. Me, I have an aversion to running around in a city; I'd much rather run up and down the dirt sides of a Mountain. That sounds like "fun", whereas running up and down the sidewalk sounds like "errands". Not to mention my apprehension about wearing little tiny shorts around my neighborhood.

Welp, let us start another crazy work week.

Good for you, Andrew. I run five miles a day as many days a week as I can manage to find the time to do so, but beginning running with a 2 and a half mile journey is somewhat difficult, and I can imagine how some of those leg muscles are 'talking' to you about it right now. However, as I'm sure your Helen has told you, it does get easier, and sometimes, at least for me, it becomes almost an addiction. The more you run, the more you seem to want to run, and it doesn't take long to feel the 'great' benefits from it. Good luck, my friend. You might even want to try swimming a few laps a day if you have access to a pool. It's great work out for the legs and arms. Just a humble suggtestin. Oh, and I wouldn't worry about wearing those tiny, little shorts around your neighborhood. After I started running, I was surprised at how many of the ladies in my neighborhood decided they'd run with me. It's great fun. ahaha But Helen will probably be with you, so maybe the women won't be so eager to follow along. Peace CJ

You're right, I have heard that running becomes something you really like doing, eventually. Helen says she feels bad if she DOESN'T run. I look forward to getting to that point someday - you guys have already paid your dues. Me, I'm walkin' funny today. Doing stretches in my office chair. Didn't affect biking to work at all, though.

Right I know where this is going.

So when you decide to do the triathalon, a friend of mine in .au has done one, and can give pointers.

I hate to disappoint, but I'm a land mammal. I'm not really interested in the water part, though I've spent a lot of time wapping around in the Pacific Ocean. If I ever do decide to go all trimanic, [info]autosloth is already a member of [info]trigeeks, and as such, in touch with a bunch of triathalon geeking. Not to mention my cousin who does the Ironman in Hawaii every year. But still, keep in mind I'm much more likely to take up crochet than start swimming in my spare time.

I run 12 minute miles.
And feel the wrath from all of my football-playing friends.

Enh, what do they know, they get to stop moving every 30 seconds. How many 12 minute miles do you run?

Bad for the sole of your foot? Maybe if you don't wear any shoes. And run on fresh lava. I've heard a lot of warnings about running, but they have to do with proper stretching and warm up, things that protect your joints and muscles. Are you sure? You hear that from a podiatrist, or someone that runs?

"Yeah, he died at 45 from a heart attack... but had the healthiest feet soles you ever saw!"

Yeah, like 'I did $50 worth of work when I saw you!' and all that really happened was you sat in the waiting room and then stripped and they tell you you weigh too much. Shit, I can get that from a mirror without the charge and magazines.

Yet I did. And I intend to continue it, and get better at running. After I get through this part where it briefly sucks to be alive, then I'll be able to run any old time I want! Missing the bus! Chasing thieves! Going to the store real quick! It's all about delayed gratification.

Running. I loved it, loved that special runner's high but after 15 years, my knee things got really pissed off at me and I did it right formwise after my first shinsplits and achilles heel (ah, enthusiasm can kill). But I also did 10 miles a day, 6 days a week. Cwazy. So it's 30 min. of stairs daily now (knees seem to prefer this) after warming up with stretches and 3 divided weightlifting workouts with emphasis on the quads and butt. Someone said it's bad for your feet? I don't think so, not with proper running shoes and I'm flat footed as heck. Also, I never want to end up with old schoolteacher arms. You know the flabby ones that are like turkey waddle with writing on the chalkboard? Eek.

Yeah, so can we just assume that you've managed to stay in shape over the last decade or so? Ok. Well, I plan on keeping somewhat lean, too. I hope to avoid floppy arms. Also, the family has a history of heart problems - if I live only as long as Dad, well, let's just say that I shouldn't make any long term investments. So running, yes, for my life.

floppy arms....i think the scientific term for it is 'bingo wings', i think. I too plan on keeping lean and in shape, and avoid the dreaded bingo wings.
I dunno, i used to be quite fit a couple of years ago. The best thing to do is keep active. Find something that you enjoy doing, don't punish yourself with a strict workout regime. Cycling is supposed to be really good....

anyhow, sorry to hear about your dad.
