yeah so, I went around on my commuter bike handing flyers with my bike n contact info out to bike shops and pawnbrokers. I went to get to one I thought was down there close to Amazon/Chinatown .Cruising downhill pretty fast, I got taken out by a minivan door opening into the bikelane right as I passed it. yeah I got doored. just now.

still in shock. but I'm sure it looked pretty dramatic what with that big crashing noise and wheels and limbs twisting through the air, leaving it all over the pavement down 12th ave.

need a new helmet

hell of a day

Oh my! Are you ok? Did you get hurt. Man, poor thing. I'm sorry you are having such a hell of a time. I hope things look up for you, and that you find your bike and everything. *hug*

I'm probably okay. Just lots of big patriotic-looking bruises. Seriously, it looks like a giant American flag on my right shoulder.

I hope I find my bike too, but I'm not optimistic.

Yeah, that's what I'm told. Basically if you are as normal as you can be, nothing bad ever happens to you. Even when you die, you actually go to a magic paradise with everyone you ever liked.

yeah d00d I was totally thinking "drink myself into oblivion". But with my current luck that'd give me a stroke or I'd get arrested or stumble off a cliff. So hiding in the house drinking water, it is.

Well! I never told you about my very first serious bicycle accident, which resulted in concussion, back in 1983. Wasn't wearing a helmet. See? I conked my head once, albeit a little minor one. But maybe you're not real enthusiastic about discussing that kind of thing.

Right now? Yeahh I'm thinking I'll be sore and have spectacular bruises, but eventually completely lose all effects from this crash. Thanks for the concern!

Yeah, of course. Helmets are like health insurance, except that health insurance doesn't make you look like you have a bowling ball on your head.

Of all things, the driver was a woman who worked at a charity clinic supporting HIV sufferers, of all things. And she and her fellow passengers were all concerned and stuff, which made it hard to be mad at them at all. I do have contact info and an offer to cover any medical expenses.

Hopefully this teaches her to check the mirror before opening the door.

My good friend. I keep telling you...you'd be a LOT safer on a Harley. Of course, a minivan door opening up on me while I'm going about 35 mph down a street on my bike might not be TOO healthy, come to think of it. ahahaha NOW you've got me paranoid of car doors opening up when I least expect them. Hey, it's still all good. Peace CJ

Hey, no worries. When you're on your Harley, people can hear you coming 2 blocks away. Hee hee hee. It's basically my fault for driving something which doesn't make any noise.

you week really sounds like it sucked in many many ways. Uhmm.. you're making my days woes sound like a cakewalk. Oh and on the subject of noise, you could always install a soundsystem on your bike.. strap a bass tube on the back.. little speakers on the front.. shattering windows as you go with the vibrations. Hope your week improves.

My week? I think my week was fine. You know, most days I eat the bar. It was just today, the bar ate me.

And yes, that sounds like a great idea. I can combine the two things that get stolen the most in the city - bicycles and sound systems. It'll be like a thief trap! I just have to put it in the middle of a big really sticky pad.

Jesus, Andr00. I hope the rest of your weekend is a little more positive.

My roommate says post about your bikes to rec.bicycles.misc (and maybe rec.bicycles.tech?), as apparently this is a newsgroup that people still read and use.

The weekend turned out all right, really. Mostly I am putting in the effort to create the possibility I might recover bikes. I checked out the bike newsgroup - I don't see any postings for stolen bikes. And the regulars seem pretty vicious about etiquette.

That's like when I rode mine into a dumpster and a telephone pole. Not at the same time of course, but they both hurt a hell of a lot. The mean dumpster threw me like 10 feet and broke my glasses, but at least I left a nice dent in it with my head.

You gotta watch out for those civil utilities, man. While I was still learning to ride my bike, I used to run into stationary objects all the time! A mailbox, a stop sign... you name it. This is the only time I've hit something when I was in the center of a bike lane with clear streets ahead of me for a mile.

Ride in the bike lane? Yeah, I'm not going to make that mistake again. Car people are just going to have to honk and drive slow, since looking in the side mirror before opening the door into the bike lane is clearly beyond them.

It's disturbing that being hit by a door happens often enough that you have created a verb for it. I'll have to watch the doors and the bike lanes and the intersection thereof.

Well, that's what they seem to call it around here. JWZ calls it a Door Prize. Tinted windows and folks parked way in the bike lane/traffic lane make it tough to avoid, though I've avoided many many doors in the couple years I've been biking in the street.
