Notes!
I be illin. Yep, right now. Ill. And can't sleep because I slept all day. Being ill.
I did that comment statistics thing.
The number one comment-tater in my livejournal is the unbeatable [info]levenator
There's a stat in there for "silverfawn", who is actually a pretty cool mod composer on #trax who never comes around anymore. And who deleted her livejournal. Bummer. Oh wait, looks like she's a nectarine person. Skie?
I also get a LOT of anonymous comments, which I guess is fine. That's sort of what I signed up for with this whole web presence thing.

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii dunno what to do now. Get a cup of coffee? Try to sleep even MORE? Read about the effects of clock jitter on sample fidelity? Yeah, maybe that.

Skie is a US scener, related to Nectarine (a fellow admin) who recently got married to Rayn. Rayn deleted his journal too, but D'Analog, who was in Outland with Rayn, didn't. D'Analog is one of the #trax people as well.

The demo thing was pre-Substance, right? (Substance = Alliance Design, Corto code, Moby music (Knulla Kuk) ) Cuz that has the juggler dude, but it makes reference to another demo (that I don't think I've seen. But it might be the one.) It also mentions Celebrandil's 'My Room' which of course is a classic (But hey, it's Celebrandil. He invented Glenz Vectors. I mean. He invented. Glenz. Vectors.)

Oh, congrats to Skie and Rayn then! They were going through rough times, last I heard. Nice to hear they worked through it all right.

Yeah, definitely pre-Substance. It wasn't the juggler guy! Well, okay, so it was a guy made out of balls, and he might've done some juggling. Now that I think about it, he had gold arms, not red. But his arms and legs weren't pointy.

When I say "sample" I mean "sampled sound". You know, like the sound files on your computer. To turn a sound from sound waves in the air into a bunch of data in the computer, it has to be "sampled", which refers to measuring the sound pressure thousands of times in a second and saving those measurements. Each of those "samples" is like a single picture in a filmstrip.

So, when you play back all the samples at the same speed that you recorded them, it pretty much makes the sound come out of your speakers.

"Jitter" is when something which is supposed to be happening at a very steady rate skips or stutters and ruins its steadiness. One thing which has to be VERY steady for things to sound right is the clock which tells the computer when to measure a sample. It happens 44,100 times a second, and if it skips the tiniest bit, like 10 trillionths of a second, it can start making things sound worse when they get played back. Looks like a typical motherboard clock can jitter as much as 2% of the clock period, which at 1GHz is, uh... 20,000 trillionths of a second. In either direction.

Yeah, I dunno if the soundcard uses the motherboard clock or what. Anyway, here at living room studios we don't use a soundcard to record samples. We use an external thingie which (I think) has its own pretty-good quality clock.

So yup, that's what I read about. Really Accurate Clocks are expensive.
