Today's the 5th annual Dad-memorial gathering and scotch tasting. Getting together with my Dad's friends is great. They're all intensely creative, accomplished, brilliant people. People that can play the hurdy-gurdy? At least 3 among them, though they all seem to be able to play anything that makes noise. Professors? More than a couple. Though all of them possess the humble wisdom of someone who knows there's lots more to learn. They are old-school contra dance scenesters and folk musicians/composers. What do I ever talk with them about? Mostly about what Dad was like, I s'pose.

Heh. Leaves me wondering if we don't know a few non-computer people in common, of a sudden...

I never told you this... but some years ago I remember one morning Chad and I were sitting in here in this office and he was reading your online journal and said that your dad had died. I had this moment of utter and total shock at the mere idea of "father died" and this unbelievable overwhelming sadness and I wanted to say something to you but couldn't think of anything. I've thought about that often in the past few weeks while I have been occasionally prone to moments of "Dammit I'm too young to lose my dad," and resolved to tell you that. I still can't think of anything smart to say though.

Reading about the memorial gathering and scotch tasting is comforting to me somehow. It sounds like a remarkable gathering of people, and it is good to think that, as life progresses and all, that there will still be such times to gather and talk about your dad with such folks.

While I've had countless encounters with contra dance folk scene types I am not sure I've ever heard the hurdy-gurdy played live. I would like to, someday.
